Greg Prato dari Allmusic mnyebutkan bahwa lagu terbaik dalam album Rocks adalah "Back in the Saddle" dan "Last Child", dengan membandingkan komposisi Joe Perry, "Combination", dengan lagu-lagu The Rolling Stones. Dia juga menyebutkan bahwa album ini lebih "liar" dibandingkan dengan album Aerosmith sebelumnya Toys in the Attic, dan menyatakan bahwa secara umum Rocks lebih baik dari album pendahulunya tersebut.[1] Ben Mitchell dari majalah Blender menyebutkan bahwa keterkaitan personil Aerosmith dengan narkoba benar-benar mempengaruhi Rocks dan dia juga menyebut album ini "liar."[7] Robert Christgau mengatakan bahwa dengan Rocks, Aerosmith melakukan pekerjaan bagus dalam meniru Led Zeppelin dan pasca Rocks, mereka mulai kehilangan "uap".[8]
