Paul Scholes lahir pada 16 November 1974 di [[Salford]], Greater Manchester. Dia keturunan Irlandia dan Irlandia Utara. Dari pihak ibunya, neneknya berasal dari Irlandia, sedangkan kakeknya berasal dari Irlandia Utara. Keluarganya pindah ke [[Langley, Greater Manchester]], ketika dia berusia 18 bulan, di mana dia tinggal di Bowness Road dan Talkin Drive. Dia bersekolah di Sekolah Dasar St Mary's RC di Langley.
