Cenchrus adalah genus tumbuhan yang tersebar luas dalam keluarga rumput (Poaceae).[5][6] Genus ini berasal dari beberapa negara di Asia, Afrika, Australia, Amerika, dan berbagai kepulauan samudra di dunia.[7][8] Pada spesies anggotanya terdapat gerinda tajam yang tertutup tulang belakang, yang menjadi ciri perbungaan anggota genusnya.[9] Beberapa ahli botani menganggap genus Pennisetum sebagai sinonim dari genus ini.[2][3][4]
