Lamproit adalah batuan vulkanik dan sub-vulkanik ultrapotasik (tinggi K). Jenis ini rendah akan CaO, Al2O3, Na2O, tinggi akan K2O/Al2O3, dan memiliki kandungan MgO yang cukup tinggi dan kaya akan unsur-unsur non-kompatibel.
Lamproit secara geografis tersebar namun dengan volume yang tidak signifikan. Tidak sepertikimberlit yang hanya ditemukan di kraton-kraton Arkean, lamproit ditemukan di daerah yang berumur bermacam-macam, mulai dari Arkean di barat Australia, hingga Paleozoikum danMesozoikum di Selatan Spanyol. Mereka juga memiliki umur yang bermacam-macam, mulai dari proterozoikum hingga pleistosen, dengan batuan berumur termuda yakni berkisar 56.000+-5000 tahun.
Vulkanologi lamproit juga bermacam-macam, dengan tipe diatrem dan cerobong kerucut.
