Smith mendapatkan kemengan pertamanya dengan mendominasi balapan seri Jerez pada Mei 2009. Posisi pole pertamanya di musim ini diperoleh di Mugello dan sekaligus mengantarkannya ke puncak podium untuk kedua kalinya setelah pertarungan yang sengit melawan [[Nicholas Terol]] dan [[Julian Simon]]. Kemenangan tersebut membuatnya menduduki klasemen puncak dengan 74.5 poin, hanya terpaut 3.5 poin dengan Julian Simon. Namun selanjutnya Simon berhasil merebut posisi puncak dan mendapat juara dunia, sedangkan Smith harus puas di posisi kedua klasemen akhir.
