Joan Beaufort (skt. 1404 – 15 Juli 1445) merupakan seorang Ratu Skotlandia dari tahun 1424 sampai 1437 sebagai pasangan Raja James I dari Skotlandia. Pada bagian dari minoritas putranya James II (dari tahun 1437 sampai 1439), dia menjabat sebagai pemangku takhta Skotlandia.
Latar belakang dan kehidupan awal
[sunting | sunting sumber]Joan Beaufort adalah putri John Beaufort, Earl Pertama Somerset dan Margaret Holland,[1] cucu John dari Gaunt, dan keponakan tiri Raja Henry IV dari Inggris.[2] Raja James I dari Skotlandia bertemu dengan Joan sewaktu menjadi tahanan di Inggris, dan mengenalnya dari setidaknya tahun 1420.[1] Dia dikatakan telah menjadi inspirasi bagi puisi panjang Raja James yang terkenal, The Kingis Quair, yang ditulis selama penahanannya, setelah dia melihatnya dari jendela di kebun.[2] Pernikahan tersebut setidaknya sebagian bersifat politis, karena pernikahan mereka merupakan bagian dari kesepakatan pembebasannya dari tahanan. Dari perspektif Inggris sebuah aliansi dengan wangsa Beaufort dimaksudkan untuk menjalin aliansi negaranya dengan bangsa Inggris, bukan dengan bangsa Prancis.[1] Negosiasi menghasilkan mahar Joan sebesar 10.000 merks dikurangi dari tebusan substansial James.[2]
Ratu Skotlandia
[sunting | sunting sumber]Pada tanggal 12 Februari 1424, Joan Beaufort dan Raja James menikah di Gereja St Mary Overie di Southwark.[1][3] Mereka berpesta di Istana Winchester tahun itu oleh pamandanya Kardinal Henry Beaufort. Dia mendampingi suaminya sekembalinya dari tahanan di Inggris ke Skotlandia, dan dinobatkan bersama suaminya di Biara Scone. Sebagai ratu, ia sering memohon kepada raja untuk mereka yang mungkin dieksekusi.[2]
Pasangan kerajaan tersebut memiliki delapan orang anak, termasuk calon James II, dan Marguerite d'Écosse, calon istri Louis XI dari Prancis.[1]
Wali penguasa

Joan juga menjadi sasaran pembunuhan bersama suaminya, tetapi berhasil bertahan dalam luka-lukanya.[1] Dia berhasil mengarahkan pendukung suaminya untuk menyerang pembunuhnya Walter Stewart, Earl Atholl, tetapi terpaksa menyerahkan kekuasaan tiga bulan kemudian.[1] Prospek yang diperintah oleh seorang wanita Inggris tidak populer di Skotlandia.[1] Earl dari Douglas ditunjuk untuk berkuasa, meskipun Joan tetap bertanggung jawab atas putranya.[1]
Menjelang akhir Juli 1439, dia menikah dengan James Stewart, Ksatria Hitam Lorne[1] setelah mendapatkan dispensasi kepausan baik untuk pertalian darah dan afinitas. James adalah sekutu terbaru Earl dari Douglas, dan merencanakannya untuk menggulingkan Alexander Livingston, gubernur Kastil Stirling, selama minoritas James II. Livingston menangkap Joan pada bulan Agustus 1439 dan memaksanya untuk melepaskan hak asuh raja muda tersebut.[1] Pada tahun 1445, konflik berlanjut, dan dia dikepung di Kastil Dunbar saat dia meninggal pada tanggal 15 Juli 1445. Dia dimakamkan di Biara Kartusian di Perth.[1][3]
