Berlatar [[Rusia]] abad ke-19 di mana ketimpangan antara golongan miskin dan kaya sangat kentara, novel ini mengambarkan pergulatan batin seorang pemuda miskin bernama Raskoldikov yang melakukan pembunuhan dan upaya polisi (detektif Porfiry) mengungkap pembunuhan tersebut. Raskoldikov membunuh Alyona Ivanovna (wanita tua yang berprofesi sebagai rentenir) dengan niat memperoleh sedikit uang untuk menopang kehidupannya dan melanjutkan mimpi-mimpinya melakukan karya besar. Malangnya, adik ipar sang rentenir (Lizareta) sedang berada di apartemen kakaknya sehingga Raskoldikov turut membunuhnya untuk menghilangkan jejak. Dia meninggalkan Tempat Kejadian Perkara TKP) dengan hanya mengambil sedikit barang dan meninggalkan harta kekayaan wanita rentenir tersebut tanpa disentuh sama sekali. Sepanjang hidupnya kemudian, Raskoldikov diombang-ambing antara perasaan bersalah dan usaha pembenaran diri melalui berbagai argumen rasionaliasi bahwa perubahan di tengah masyarakat atau sebuah karya besar kerap kali harus dilakukan dengan pengorbanan. Kedua wanita malang tersebut dia bayangkan sebagai korban atas usahanya melakukan sebuah karya besar. Dia kerap mengasosiasikan dirinya dengan tokoh-tokoh besar seperti [[Napoleon Bonaparte|Napoleon]]. Novel tersebut mula-mula diterbitkan dalam jurnal sastra The Russian Messenger.[1]
