Pada tangal 20 Juli 2012, seorang pria bersenjata melepaskan tembakan saat pemutaran perdana tengah malam film The Dark Knight Rises di sebuah bioskop Cinemark di Aurora, Colorado, menewaskan 12 orang dan melukai 58 lainnya. Pria tersebut bertindak seorang diri dan mengenakan pakaian pelindung, memasuki bioskop dan melepaskan granat taktis, kemudian menembak para penonton menggunakan sejumlah senjata api. Serangan tersebut diliput oleh media di seluruh dunia dan menjadi salah satu pembunuhan massal terparah dalam sejarah modern Amerika Serikat.

Korban

Sepuluh orang meninggal di tempat, sementara dua lainnya di rumah sakit.[7] Dari jumlah total 70 orang yang ditembak, 58 orang terluka dan 12 sisanya meninggal dunia.[4][5][7][8]

Korban luka dirawat di Children's Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, Medical Center of Aurora, Parker Adventist Hospital, Rose Medical Center, Swedish Hospital, dan University Hospital,[9][10] serta rumah sakit tenda di lokasi kejadian.[11] Saksi mata yang tidak terluka diungsikan ke Gateway High School untuk dimintai keterangan. Usia korban bervariasi mulai dari 3 bulan sampai 45 tahun.[12]

Departemen Pertahanan AS menyatakan seorang prajurit AL, John Larimer yang ditempatkan di Aurora bersama Angkatan Laut AS, yang berada di bioskop tersebut belum diketahui nasibnya.[13]
