Riwayat produksi film Justice League (2017) tergolong bermasalah manakala naskah dan pengambilan gambarnya mengalami perubahan besar-besaran sebelum dan semasa produksi serta pergantian sutradara, sehingga versi yang ditayangkan di bioskop dilaporkan sangat berbeda dari praproduksi dan pengambilan gambar utama awal.[1][2] Kebanyakan perubahan tersebut bertolak dari penerimaan negatif terhadap film DC Extended Universe (DCEU) sebelumnya Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) dan Suicide Squad (2016).[3] Zack Snyder yang menyutradarai sebagian besar produksi film ini mengundurkan diri pada Mei 2017 selepas kematian anaknya, sehingga Joss Whedon mengambil alih kursi sutradara dan menyelesaikan pascaproduksi walaupun namanya tak tercantum di kredit. Joss memegang kendali atas pengambilan gambar ulang serta perubahan lain yang menambahkan nuansa yang lebih terang dan lebih banyak kelakar ke dalam film, termasuk pula memotong durasi hingga 120 menit sesuai dengan permintaan Warner Bros.[3][4][2]
Penayangan Justice League terhitung jeblok dan mendapatkan tanggapan beragam baik dari pengkritik maupun penonton, sehingga Warner Bros. mengevaluasi kembali masa depan DCEU.[5][6] Dengan rincian yang muncul tentang produksi film yang bermasalah dan keadaan film sebelum Zack mengundurkan diri, maka terdapat keinginan agar versi alternatif lebih setia dengan visi film Zack. Penggemar karya Zack, tokoh-tokoh industri film lainnya, bahkan anggota para pemain dan kru telah mengajukan petisi bagi penayangan "Versi Zack", walau Warner Bros menyatakan tidak memiliki rencana terkini untuk menerbitkan versi alternatif Justice League.[7] Pada 20 Mei 2020, Zack Snyder membenarkan secara pribadi bahwa Versi Zack akan ditayangkan di HBO Max. Versi ini dijadwalkan ditayangkan pada 2021.[8]
Naskah asli Zack dan Chris (2014–2016)

Ada banyak pengambilan gambar yang kami lakukan, [tetapi] ide yang sebenarnya, ide yang keras, ide yang menakutkan yang tidak pernah kami lakukan pengambilan gambar karena studio akan berkata, 'Itu gila.' Kami juga merasa tidak aman pada saat setelah [Batman v Superman] tayang, kami hanya merasa seperti, 'Saya kira itu gila. Akan ada histeria massal di jalanan jika kami memfilmkan ini.'"
Setelah penayangan Man of Steel (2013), sutradara Zack Snyder menjabarkan dasar dari DC Extended Universe (DCEU), yang berpusat di sekitar lima film, di antaranya Man of Steel, Batman v Superman dan trilogi Justice League. Sebagaimana dimaknai Stephen M. Colbert dari Screen Rant, struktur waralaba ini akan menjadi "kebalikan" dari Marvel Cinematic Universe. Alih-alih film solo yang berpuncak pada seri film Avengers, DC mengambil langkah berbeda manakala akan berpusat pada film cross-over dengan film-film solo sesekali di tengah-tengah film cross-over pada waktu-waktu yang berbeda.[10] Visi asli Zack untuk seri ini adalah untuk menjadikan Batman v Superman sebagai satu di antara film bernuansa gelap dalam waralaba ini dan menjadikan film-film lebih tertolong dengan nuansa daripada sebelumnya. Alih-alih demikian, Zack menggambarkan naskah asli Justice League Zack yang ditulis Chris Terrio sebagai gelap dan menakutkan. Menurut seni konsep, adegan yang melibatkan Apokolips dan New Gods sangat dipengaruhi oleh fiksi ilmiah dan karya H. R. Giger.[11][12]
Awalnya, Steppenwolf dan Parademon akan menjadi musuh di Suicide Squad yang mengendalikan Enchantress dengan Mother Boxes,[13][14] dan Darkseid akan menjadi antagonis utama di Justice League. Menurut Zack, sedikitnya bagian film itu dipersiapkan untuk mengeksplorasi "Knightmare" Bruce Wayne, lewat adegan di Batman v Superman ketika Bruce Wayne memiliki penglihatan akan masa depan pascaapokaliptik Gotham, diikuti oleh Flash yang muncul untuk memberi tahu dia bahwa Lois Lane adalah "kunci" dan khawatir bahwa ia "terlalu cepat". Dalam naskah awal untuk Justice League, kelanjutan dari "Knightmare" memiliki Darkseid menggunakan tabung ledakan untuk berteleportasi ke Batcave dan membunuh Lois Lane. Ini akan membuat Superman rentan terhadap Darkseid's Anti-Life Equation, rumus matematika fiksi dari buku-buku komik untuk mengendalikan pikiran makhluk hidup. Dengan Superman di bawah kendali Darkseid, mereka mengambil alih Bumi dan menciptakan masa depan pasca-apokaliptik dari "Knightmare" Wayne. Versi Zack (2016–2017)
[sunting | sunting sumber]Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice mendapatkan sambutan buruk oleh pengkritik (28% di Rotten Tomatoes[18]), walaupun mendapatkan sambutan yang lebih hangat di mata penonton (B di CinemaScore[19]). Kritik yang ditujukan kepada film itu umumnya menyoroti nuansa gelap, kurangnya kelakar, dan pergerakan yang lambat. Tanggapan ini menyebabkan Warner Bros. dan Zack untuk mengevaluasi kembali film DCEU berikutnya, khususnya Suicide Squad yang sudah menyelesaikan pengambilan gambar utama, dan Justice League yang pengambilan gambarnya tinggal satu bulan lagi.
Versi HBO Max
[sunting | sunting sumber]Pada Mei 2020, Warner Bros. diumumkan telah menyetujui versi baru film ini yang akan ditayangkan di HBO Max pada tahun 2021. Versi ini diperkirakan menelan biaya sekitar $20-30 juta untuk menuntaskan efek khusus, skor musik, dan pengeditan. Walaupun demikian, terbuka kemungkinan versi ini akan dijadikan film berdurasi empat jam atau miniseri enam bagian visi asli Zack.[20]
