Ia berasal dari benua Asia tropis dan beberapa pulau yang berdekatan dengannya, dan telah dinaturalisasi di beberapa bagian Jepang. Keturunan domestisi hibridanya, finch jepang atau finch bengal, ditemukan di seluruh dunia sebagai hewan timangan dan organisme model biologi.
Asal mula
Asal mula dan filogeni diperoleh Antonio Arnaiz-Villena et al. Estrildinae mungkin berasal dari India dan setelah itu menyebar (menuju habitat Afrika dan Samudra Pasifik).
