Godfrey Gao (Hanzi: 高以翔; Pinyin: Gāo Yǐxiáng; 22 September 1984 – 27 November 2019)[1] adalah seorang aktor dan juga model keturunan Tiongkok dan Malaysia asal Taiwan, yang pada tanggal 27 November 2019 meninggal dunia, saat melakukan shooting dalam sebuah acara televisi di Tiongkok. Gao juga dikenal sebagai model pria Asia pertama yang menjadi salah satu model untuk sebuah merk terkenal Louis Vuitton. Dalam dunia perfiliman, dia dikenal pernah berperan sebagai Magnus Bane dalam sebuah film adaptasi tahun 2013 berjudul The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones dan dia juga dikenal melalui acara series di pertelevisian Tiongkok berjudul Remembering Lichuan.

Gao lahir dengan nama Tsao Chih-Hsiang di Taipei, Taiwan, pada tanggal 22 September 1984[2][3] Ayah Gao merupakan orang Shanghai, Tiongkok namun besar di Taiwan,[4] sedangkan ibu Gao adalah seorang Peranakan dari George Town, Penang, Malaysia.[5] Kemudian saat masih kecil, dia pindah ke Vancouver, British Columbia, Kanada, dan mengecap pendidikan di Universitas Capilano, di distrik Vancouver Utara, Kanada.[6]

Lalu pada tahun 2004, Gao kembali pulang ke Taiwan dan menggeluti dunia model dibawah manajemen bernama JetStar Entertainment.[7][8] Namanya kian dikenal sebagai model, hingga pada tahun 2011, Gao menjadi orang Asia pertama sebagai salah satu model untuk merk terkenal Louis Vuitton.[6]

Gao mencoba menjajaki acara televisi menjadi aktor dalam berbagai drama dan film. Pada tahun 2013, namanya mulai dikenal sebagai aktor setelah berperan sebagai Magnus Bane di film garapan Amerika berjudul The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.[5] Keberhasilannya dalam film perdana itu, membawa Gao berperan dalam film berjudul Wedding Bible tahun 2014 bersama lawan mainnya seorang aktris Korea Selatan Yoo In-na;[9] drama televisi tahun 2016 Remembering Lichuan, dan film genre komedi romantis tahun 2017 berjudul Love is a Broadway Hit, bersama pemeran Wang Likun, Wang Chuanjun, Yuan Li dan Naren Weiss.[10]

Meninggal dunia

Secara mengejutkan, pada hari Rabu, 27 November 2019, Gao meninggal dunia pukul 1:45 dini hari di Ningbo, Tiongkok, diusia 35 tahun. Kematian Gao disebabkan serangan jantung pada saat melakukan shooting dalam sebuah acara reality show berjudul Chase Me, sebuah acara televisi series oleh stasiun televisi "Zhejiang".[6][11] Dia sempat dibawa ke Rumah Sakit, namun jelang tiga jam kemudian, pihak Rumah Sakit mengumumkan kematian Godfrey Gao pada pukul 1:50 pagi waktu setempat.[12]

Kemudian pihak manajemennya JetStar Entertaintment, mengumumkan kepergian Gao dalam akun sosial media milik manajemen, Sina Weibo.[13] Sementara tim program acara Chase Me juga membenarkan bahwa kematian Gao karena mengalami serangan jantung.[14][15] Jenazah Gao kemudian dibawa pada hari itu juga ke Taipei tanah kelahirannya, untuk dikebumikan.[6]
