Bahan bakar sintetis adalah bahan bakar cair, atau terkadang bahan bakar gas, yang diperoleh dari gas sintetis, campuran karbon monoksida dan hidrogen, di mana gas sintetis tersebut berasal dari gasifikasi bahan baku padat seperti batu bara atau biomassa atau dengan mereformasi gas alam.
Cara umum untuk memurnikan bahan bakar sintetis termasuk proses Fischer–Tropsch,[1] konversi metanol menjadi bensin,[2] atau pencairan batu bara langsung.[3]
Pada Juli 2019, kapasitas produksi bahan bakar sintetis komersial di seluruh dunia mencapai lebih dari 240.000 barel per hari (38.000 m³ / hari), dengan banyak proyek baru dalam konstruksi atau pengembangan, seperti Rekayasa Karbon.
