Benz lahir di Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,[1] tumbuh di Murrysville, dan lulus dari Franklin Regional High School.[2] Ibunya, Joanne Marie (née Seemiller), adalah seorang skater, dan ayahnya, George Benz, Jr., adalah seorang ahli bedah di Pittsburgh.[3] Keluarga itu menetap di dekat Murrysville ketika Benz berusia dua tahun, dan dia mulai bermain ice skating ketika dia berusia tiga tahun.[4] Dia berkompetisi di Kejuaraan AS 1988 di junior dansa es dengan pasangan skatingnya David Schilling, dan selesai di tempat ke-13.[5][6] Ketika Benz berusia 14 tahun, dia mengalami patah tulang akibat stres di kaki kanannya dan harus mengambil cuti.[2]
