When the original television series was cancelled in 1969, ''Star Trek'' creator [[Gene Roddenberry]] lobbied Paramount to continue the franchise through a film. A series of writers attempted to craft a suitably epic script, but the attempts did not satisfy Paramount, so the studio scrapped the project in 1977. Paramount instead planned on returning the franchise to its roots with a new television series, ''[[Star Trek: Phase II]]''. The box office success of ''[[Close Encounters of the Third Kind]]'' convinced Paramount that science fiction films other than ''[[Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope|Star Wars]]'' could do well at the box office, so the studio canceled production of ''Phase&nbsp;II'' and resumed its attempts at making a ''Star Trek'' film. In 1978, Paramount assembled the largest press conference held at the studio since the 1950s to announce that double [[Academy Award]]–winning director [[Robert Wise]] would helm a $15&nbsp;million film adaptation of the television series.

A [[Starfleet]] monitoring station detects an alien force hidden in a massive cloud of energy moving through space towards Earth. The cloud destroys three [[Klingon]] warships and the monitoring station en route. Kirk]], has been promoted to Admiral and works in San Francisco as Chief of Starfleet Operations. Starfleet dispatches the ''Enterprise'' to investigate the cloud entity as the ship is the only one in intercept range, requiring its new systems to be [[shakedown cruise|tested in transit]].

She is replaced by a robotic doppelgänger, a probe sent by "V'ger" to study the crew. Decker is distraught over the loss of Ilia, with whom he had a romantic history. He becomes troubled as he attempts to extract information from the doppelgänger, which has Ilia's memories and feelings buried within. Spock takes a [[spacewalk]] to the alien vessel's surface and attempts a telepathic [[mind meld]] with it. In doing so, he learns that the vessel is V'ger itself, a living machine.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture adalah film fiksi ilmiah Amerika yang dibuat oleh Paramount Pictures pada tahun 1979. Film ini adalah film Star Trek pertama yang dibuat berdasarkan seri televisi Star Trek: The Original Series.

Alur Cerita

Sebuah stasiun pemantau Starfleet mendeteksi alien yang bersembunyi di dalam sebuah awan raksasa bertenaga tinggi dan awan tersebut mengarah ke bumi. Sementara itu, di bumi, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) sedang mengalami renovasi total dan James T. Kirk sudah dipromosikan menjadi admiral dan bekerja di San Fransisco sebagai Kepala Operasi Starfleet. Starfleet memerintahkan Enterprise untuk menyelediki awan tersebut.

Kirk mengambil alih komando Enterprise dengan dalih pengalamannya sehingga Kapten Willard Decker marah. Enterprise sendiri juga belum berada dalam kondisi prima, beberapa uji coba berjalan dengan buruk; dua petugas meninggal karena malafungsi transporter. Ketidakcocokan Kirk dengan Decker semakin meningkat saat Kirk terlihat tidak terbiasa dengan Enterprise.

Tiba-tiba, sebuah pesawat mendekati Enterprise. Ternyata pesawat tersebut membawa Spock untuk mengisi jabatan petugas sains. Spock menjelaskan bahwa ia sedang melakukan ritual penghapusan emosi di Vulcan saat ia merasakan akan menemukan jawaban atas semua pernyataannya di dalam awan tersebut.

Enterprise berhasil menghadang awan energi tersebut dan diserang. Bahkan, sebuah pemantau menyusup ke anjungan, menyerang Spock, dan akhirnya menculik Ilia, navigator pesawat. Ia digantikan oleh robot pemantau yang dikirm "V'ger" untuk mempelajari segala sesuatu mengenai Enterprise. Sementara itu, Decker merasa sangat sedih karena cintanya, Ilia meninggal.

Spock berjalan dengan pakaian luar angaksa ke arah V'ger dan menemukan bahwa seluruh awan/pesawat tersebut adalah V'ger, mesin yang hidup. Akhirnya, setelah dibujuk, robot pemantau yang mirip Ilia berhasil dibujuk untuk membawa awak penting Enterprise ke pusat dari V'ger. Ternyata, V'ger adalah Voyager 6, sebuah satelit yang diluncurkan dari bumi pada abad ke-20. Sejarah mencatat bahwa Voyager 6 hilang. Voyager 6 ditemukan oleh alien berbentuk mesin yang menginterpretasi progam Voyager; mempelajari sebanyak mungkin dan memberikan informasi tersebut ke penciptanya. Alien mesin tersebut memuktahirkan Voyager sehingga Voyager mempelajari banyak sekali hal sampai memperoleh kesadaran.

Spock menyadari bahwa V'ger sangat fokus untuk menuntaskan misinya. Karena itu, V'ger terus-menerus mencari penciptanya dan bersikeras bahwa penciptanya akan datang dalam wujud manusia. Akhirnya, awak Enterprise sadar bahwa V'ger ingin menyatukan diri dengan penciptanya. Deckerpun menyatukan dirinya dengan V'ger dan robot pemantau Ilia. Merekapun menghilang ke dimensi lain. Bumi berhasil diselamatkan, dan Kirk memerintahkan Enterprise untuk melaksanakan misi berikutnya.[2]

  • William Shatner sebagai James T. Kirk, Kapten USS Enterprise dan Admiral Starfleet. Dalam suatu konferensi pers pada tahun 1978, seorang wartawan bertanya bagaimana ia bermain dalam film ini. Shatner menjawab, "seorang aktor tidak hanya memerankan karakter yang ia mainkan, tetapi juga karakter pribadinya. Leonard Nimoy dan saya sudah berubah banyak beberapa tahun terakhir, dan kami tidak akan menutup-nutupi perubahan tersebut."[4]
  • Leonard Nimoy sebagai Spock, petugas sains Enterprise. Pada awalnya, Nimoy tidak mau bermain dalam film ini karena tidak puas dengan royalti Star Trek yang tidak dibayar. Namun, Direktur Robert Wise berubah pikiran setelah anak-anaknya berkata bahwa film ini tidak akan menjadi film Star Trek tanpa Nimoy. Iapun mengirim Jeffrey Katzenberg ke New York untuk menemui dan membayar Nimoy. Nimoy setuju untuk bermain dalam film ini asalkan naskah final harus mendapat persetujuannya.[5] Nimoy senang memerankan Spock karena membuatnya terkenal.[4]
  • DeForest Kelley sebagai Leonard McCoy, kepala medis Enterprise. Kelley bersama Shatner dan Nimoy melobi agar karakter mereka lebih ditonjolkan, tetapi opini mereka ditolak mentah-mentah.[6]
  • James Doohan sebagai Montgomery Scott, kepala mesin Enterprise. Doohan membuat kamus Bahasa Klingon berdasarkan film ini.[7] Ahli bahasa Marc Okrand juga ikut mengembangkan Bahasa Klingon di kemudian hari.[8]
  • Walter Koenig sebagai Pavel Chekov, kepala senjata Enterprise. Koenig kecewa karena perannya yang sangat sedikit dalam film ini. Film ini adalah film Star Trek, tetapi bukan film Star Trek tua yang kita kenal.[9]
  • Nichelle Nichols sebagai Uhura, kepala komunikasi Enterprise. Nichols menulis dalam autobiografinya bahwa ia adalah salah satu aktor yang tidak nyaman dengan seragam baru dalam film ini.[10]
