Roy dilahirkan di [[Shillong]], [[Meghalaya]]. Ibunya berasal dari [[Kerala]] dan beragama [[Kristen Ortodoks Suriah]], ayahnya dari [[Bengal]] dan beragama [[Hindu]]. Ia dibesarkan di Aymanam, di [[Kerala]], bersekolah di Corpus Christi. Ia kemudian pergi ke [[Delhi]] pada usia 16, dan tinggal di sebuah gubuk kecil dengan atap seng di daerah [[Feroz Shah Kotla]] di Delhi, dan menjual botol bekas untuk menunjang hidupnya.
