McPhee lahir di Los Angeles, California.] Ayahnya, Daniel McPhee, adalah seorang produser televisi. Ibunya, Peisha (née Burch) McPhee, telah menjadi pelatih vokal di American Idol sejak 2011. Keluarga itu pindah ke lingkungan Sherman Oaks di Los Angeles ketika dia berusia 12 tahun. Peisha McPhee mengenali bakat musik putrinya dan memutuskan untuk melatihnya. Kakak McPhee, Adriana, telah menjadi pelatih vokal di American Idol sejak 2012. McPhee adalah keturunan Irlandia, Skotlandia, dan Jerman.[4]

Dia meninggalkan perguruan tinggi sebelum lulus atas saran manajernya, dan kembali ke Los Angeles untuk mencoba pilot televisi. Pada tahun 2005, McPhee dibujuk oleh akhirnya suaminya Nick Cokas dan orang tuanya untuk mencoba kompetisi serial televisi American Idol. Dia mengikuti audisi di San Francisco dan menyanyikan "God Bless the Child", awalnya dilakukan oleh Billie Holiday, dan terpilih menjadi peserta di musim kelima, yang ditayangkan pada tahun 2006. Ia menjadi juara dua dalam kompetisi ini.Pada 6 Juni 2006, Sony BMG mengumumkan bahwa McPhee telah menandatangani kontrak dengan pencipta seri American Idol, Simon Fuller, 19 Recordings Limited dan Sony BMG's RCA Records.

McPhee melakukan debut akting di studinya dalam komedi The House Bunny, yang berperan sebagai salah satu dari sedikit anggota perkumpulan mahasiswi yang tidak sesuai. Film yang dirilis pada Agustus 2008, membintangi Anna Faris sebagai Playboy Bunny yang membawa gadis-gadis di bawah sayapnya. Film ini disutradarai oleh Fred Wolf untuk Columbia Pictures dan diproduksi oleh Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions.[7] McPhee bermain sebagai bintang tamu dalam CSI: NY dalam episode "Prey" sebagai penyanyi dan penguntit korban yang membunuh penguntitnya. Pada April 2010, McPhee membuat pilot TV untuk The Pink House. McPhee memerankan Emily, seorang gadis Midwestern yang baru di Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles.

McPhee menandatangani perjanjian dukungan dua tahun pada 2006 dengan Sexy Hair Concepts untuk menjadi juru bicara selebriti pertama mereka untuk lini produk perawatan rambut mereka.

McPhee menandatangani perjanjian dukungan dua tahun dengan Neutrogena untuk menjadi juru bicara baru untuk lini produk perawatan kulit anti-jerawat mereka. Pada Maret 2008, ia memfilmkan iklan pertamanya, yang mulai ditayangkan di televisi pada Mei 2008 dan di situs web Neutrogena's skinid.com.

Setelah berkencan selama tiga tahun, pada 2 Februari 2008, McPhee menikah dengan Nick Cokas di Gereja Presbyterian Beverly Hills. Pada Oktober 2013 dia difoto di depan umum mencium direktur Smash yang sudah menikah, Michael Morris. Morris saat itu dan masih menikah dengan aktris Mary McCormack dan ayah dari tiga putri. Pada 22 Mei 2014, McPhee mengajukan gugatan cerai dari Cokas, setelah "dipisahkan tahun lalu." Cerai perceraiannya dari Cokas diselesaikan pada 8 Februari 2016.

McPhee berkencan dengan rekan main Scorpion-nya Elyes Gabel selama hampir dua tahun. Mereka berpisah pada 2016. Dia bertunangan dengan produser rekaman David Foster pada Juni 2018. Mereka menikah setahun kemudian pada 28 Juni 2019 di Gereja Apostolik Armenia St. Yeghiche di Kensington, London.[8]
