Awdry dan putranya Christopher. Serial ini mengikuti petualangan Thomas, sebuah lokomotif uap biru di pulau fiksi, Sodor, yang memiliki jaringan perkeretaapian North Western Railway. Karakter utama lainnya adalah Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, dan Toby yang dikenal sebagai the steam team (tim kereta uap); Nia dan Rebecca menggantikan Edward dan Henry sejak seri 22. Mereka bekerja untuk Pengawas Gendut yang selalu ingin keretanya untuk "sangat berguna".

Big World! Big Adventures! berakhir pada Januari 2021. Rencana untuk melanjutkan serial ini dibatalkan dan digantikan oleh serial baru dengan animasi 2D, Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, yang perdana tayang pada September 2021 di Cartoon Network.[2]

Pengisi suara

Kreator Brit Allcroft merasa esensial apabila seri ini hanya diisi oleh satu suara: sang narator, supaya seperti cerita dari buku yang biasanya dibacakan di rumah. Seiring dengan bergantinya serial ini dengan CGI, masing-masing karakter diberikan pengisi suara yang berbeda.
