"In the End" (bahasa Indonesia: Pada akhirnya) adalah lagu karya grup musik rok Amerika Serikat Linkin Park. Lagu ini adalah trek kedelapan dari album debut Hybrid Theory (2000) dan dirilis sebagai singel terakhir. Lagu ini adalah lagu yang paling sering dinyanyikan saat konser bersama "One Step Closer" di tempat kedua.[7]

"In the End" mendapatkan pujian dari kritikus, terutama ketika menyoroti riff piano serta rap dari Mike Shinoda. "In the End" juga memperoleh popularitas yang cukup besar, dan meraih kesuksesan komersial. Lagu ini mencapai sepuluh besar di banyak tangga musik seluruh dunia dan mencapai posisi kedua pada Billboard Hot 100, puncak tertinggi grup pada tangga musik tersebut, serta merupakan lagu pertama yang memperoleh 40 terbaik. Lagu ini juga mendapat posisi pertama 100 lagu top terbaik Z100 tahun 2002. Lagu ini masuk dalam posisi 121 dalam 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born yang dihimpun majalah Blender.[8] Lagu ini adalah lagu rok kedua yang paling banyak diputar di Billboard sepanjang dekade. Pada Juni 2021, itu menjadi lagu nu metal pertama yang melampaui satu miliar streaming di Spotify.[2]

"In the End" adalah lagu yang paling dikenal dalam sejarah Linkin Park dan merupakan signature songs. Vokalis grup, Chester Bennington, awalnya membenci lagu ini dan tidak ingin menyertakannya dalam album Hybrid Theory.[9] Lagu ini di-remix dalam album Reanimation sebagai "Enth E ND". Video musik yang disutradarai Nathan Cox dan turntablis Joe Hahn, menampilkan aksi band dalam latar fantasi.

Menjelang perilisan ulang tahun ke-20 untuk Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park merilis versi demo "In the End" sebagai single kedua dari rilis ulang Hybrid Theory pada 1 Oktober 2020.[10]

Rilisan

CD singel ini dirilis dalam dua bagian, "Part 1" dan "Part 2". Bedanya adalah trek dan warnanya: "Part 1" berwarna kuning dan "Part 2" berwarna merah. Versi DVD "In the End" juga dirilis dan menyertakan versi audio "In the End", "Crawling" dan empat wawancara selama 30 detik.

Pada 27 Maret 2002 singel ini dirilis di Jepang sebagai CD tujuh trek berjudul In the End: Live & Rare. CD ini berisi versi konser dari "Papercut", "Points of Authority", dan "A Place for My Head", "Step Up" (dari Hybrid Theory EP), "My December", and "High Voltage".

Video musik

Video musik for "In the End" disyuting di sela-sela tur 2001 Ozzfest dan disutradarai Nathan Cox dan DJ Joe Hahn, yang kemudian menyutradarai video musik berikutnya (keduanya juga menjadi sutradara lagu "Papercut").[11][12] Meski latar belakang lagu "In the End" difilmkan di Gurun California, band ini justru tampil di sebuah studio di Los Angeles, dan mengandalkan CGI dan kompositor sebagai produk akhir. Tampil di studio membuat Hahn dan Cox dapat menyemprotkan air di atas panggung dan membasahi anggota band.[12]

Video musik lagu ini menggunakan latar fantasi dan sangat menekankan animasi CGI. Band ini tampil di atas patung raksasa yang mirip patung-patung Mesir kuno, yang mempunyai prajurit bersayap di atasnya yang tampak mirip dengan sampul album Hybrid Theory.

Bagian rapping Mike Shinoda berlatarkan tanah kering yang ditumbuhi semak-semak berduri yang bertumbuh cepat dari dalam tanah, lalu mengelilinya dan pecah menjadi debu (verse pertama), sedangkan tumbuhan hijau bertumbuh tepat di tempat Shinoda berada (verse kedua). Saat Mike bernyanyi rap, Chester berdiri di atas loteng dengan talang air berbentuk kepala manusia di ujungnya. Loteng ini berada di depan pintu yang berbentuk trapesium. Pada puncak dan akhir lagu, langit mendadak mendung dan turun hujan badai, dan band tampil basah kuyup hingga akhir lagu. Begitu memasuki outro hujan pun berhenti dan kamera menjauhi patung tempat band berada, menampilkan tanah yang kering itu ditumbuhi rumput-rumput hijau dan bunga-bungaan. Saat hujan, bagian atas patung itu bergerak. Mike Shinoda menyebut bahwa Princess Mononoke menginspirasi cuplikan video itu.[13]

Video itu disutradarai oleh Nathan "Karma" Cox dan Joe Hahn.[11] Desain produksi oleh Patrick Tatopoulos yang juga mendesain dan mengelola produksi set non-CGI. Video ini berhasil memenangkan Video Rock Terbaik dalam gelaran MTV VMA 2002.[14]

Paus yang melayang sesekali muncul di sekitar patung raksasa selama lagu berjalan, khususnya pada bagian akhir video. Paus itu adalah idenya Mr. Hahn. Ia mengatakan, "Aku sepertinya tidak mengeluarkan sesuatu tanpa bukti; itu masuk akal buatku." Alasannya sampai saat ini tak jelas. Paus itu muncul juga dalam lagu "Shadow of the Day".

Walaupun ada suara piano, video ini sama sekali tidak menampilkan Mike bermain piano (yang menciptakan trek piano ini) atau orang lain bermain piano. Namun, pada bagian outro, Joe Hahn justru menggunakan sampler untuk memainkan trek piano tersebut.

Per Mei 2020, video musik "In the End" berhasil mencapai 970 juta kali ditonton di YouTube. Video ini diunggah dua kali oleh akun YouTube resmi Linkin Park. Video yang pertama diunggah pada 4 Maret 2007 dalam format 240 piksel. Video ini diunggah lagi pada 26 Oktober 2009 dalam format 360 piksel. Bahkan, akun YouTube Warner Bros. Records juga mengunggahnya pada waktu yang sama dalam format 480 piksel.[15][16][17]

Tanggapan

"In the End" mendapatkan pujian dari kritikus. VH1 menempatkannya pada posisi ke-84 dalam daftar "100 Greatest Songs of the '00s".[18] Lagu ini juga masuk dalam peringkat kedua dalam daftar "Top 21st century Hard Rock songs" oleh Loudwire.[19] Pada majalah Stylus lagu ini dinobatkan sebagai "lagu nu metal klasik".[20] Pada majalah Kerrang!, lagu ini disertakan dalam "The Ultimate Nu Metal Mixtape".[21] NME justru mengkritiknya dengan mengungkapkannya sebagai, "...karya rap rock MTV pada tempat yang kurang penting."[22]

Prestasi

Pada 2015, lagu ini dinobatkan sebagai daftar Kerrang! Rock 100 menyusul singel 2014 "Final Masquerade".[23] Setelah meninggalnya Bennington pada tahun 2017, Billboard menobatkan "In the End" sebagai lagu Linkin Park terbaik dan melabelinya sebagai salah satu lagu pop terbaik abad ke-21.[24] Pada tahun yang sama, itu terdaftar sebagai hit rok alternatif terbaik ke-133 sepanjang masa oleh Consequence.

Penampilan tangga lagu

"In the End" merupakan lagu teratas dalam tangga musik Amerika Serikat, debut pada posisi ke-78 dan memuncak pada tangga Billboard Hot 100 pada Maret 2002 dan terus dikalahkan oleh lagu di puncaknya "Ain't It Funny" oleh Jennifer Lopez dan Ja Rule. Lagu ini bertahan di tangga tersebut dengan total 38 minggu. Lagu ini mencapai posisi pertama pada Modern Rock Tracks selama lima minggu, mulai Desember 2001, menjadi hit pertama di tangga musik tersebut. Lagu itu menghabiskan 44 minggu bertahan, menjadi lagu terlama dalam tangga tersebut dan juga mencapai posisi ketiga pada Mainstream Rock Tracks menghabiskan 40 minggu, terpanjang kedua setelah "One Step Closer" selama 42 minggu. Lagu ini juga masuk dalam tangga lagu Pop Songs selama lima minggu dan bertahan di tangga tersebut selama 27 minggu. "In the End" adalah singel dengan penampilan terbaik ketujuh dalam Billboard Hot 100 selama 2002, dan penampilan lagu rock dan alternatif terbaik kedua sepanjang dekade dalam Alternative Songs dan Rock Songs hanya di bawah "Headstrong" karya Trapt dan "How You Remind Me" karya Nickelback berturut-turut. Per Juni 2014, singel ini terjual 2.555.000 kopi di Amerika Serikat.[25]

"In the End" mencapai 5 terbaik BDS Airplay di Kanada dan bertahan berbulan-bulan. "In the End" mencapai debut di puncak pada Canadian Hot 100 daripada di Amerika Serikat dan memuncakinya lagi tiga minggu kemudian selama dua minggu. Bahkan di Kanada, lagu ini justru berada lebih tinggi daripada "Papercut".

Lagu ini juga dirilis di Australia, Eropa, dan Selandia Baru tanggal 22 Desember 2001. "One Step Closer", "Papercut" dan "Crawling" menjangkau 20 terbaik di Britania Raya, dengan "In the End" mencapai 10 terbaik. "In the End" meneruskan tren singel pada posisi tinggi kala debutnya dan memuncaki posisi ke-8. Lagu ini tetap bertahan pada 100 terbaik pada tangga lagu itu 20 minggu tak berturut-turut.

"In the End" debut pada posisi ke-44 tanggal 2 Desember 2001 dalam ARIA Charts. Lalu naik ke posisi empat pada 10 Februari 2002. Lagu ini menjadi lagu tersukses kedua di Australia, disusul "One Step Closer" dan di bawah "New Divide". Pada minggu-minggu awal mulai 30 Juli 2017, singel ini masuk lagi dalam tangga lagu, pada posisi ke-10, lebih dari 15 tahun sejak lagu ini muncul pada 50 besar, menyusul kematian Chester Bennington.

"In the End" mencapai 30 terbaik di Swiss dan 20 terbaik di Belanda, Irlandia, Jerman, Belgia, dan Selandia Baru. Ini adalah singel pertama juga yang masuk tangga musik di Prancis, debut pada posisi ke-40 dan bertahan 17 minggu. Namun sejak meninggalnya Bennington pada Juli 2017, lagu ini mencapai posisi ke-23 selama seminggu. Serupa, lagu ini masuk lagi dalam tangga Britania Raya pada posisi ke-14 pada minggu mulai 30 Juli 2017.

Remix

Lagu remix yang berjudul "Enth E ND", ada dalam album Reanimation. Album ini menyertakan artist hip hop Motion Man dan KutMasta Kurt. Berbeda dengan pandangan bahwa lagu itu remix, lagu ini berbeda karena liriknya telah diubah, serta memiliki video musik sendiri. Lagu ini dirilis bersama "FRGT/10".

Video musiknya disutradarai oleh Jason Goldwatch. Ini dimulai dalam warna hitam dan putih dengan seseorang mengambil headphone, terganggu oleh gambar – Mike Shinoda di dalam mobil, gambar berkedip dengan huruf "LP" tertulis di atasnya, dan layar TV. KutMasta Kurt ditampilkan DJing, kemudian Motion Man terlihat di dalam mobil, nge-rap. Kamera mengarah ke Mike Shinoda dan videonya sekarang berwarna. Video diperbesar ke layar kecil, lalu video menjadi hitam putih lagi. Mike Shinoda terlihat mengendarai mobil bersama KurtMasta Kurt dan Motion Man. Video menunjukkan layar lagi dan Mike terlihat berwarna, kemudian menjadi hitam putih lagi. Mike Shinoda dan Motion Man terlihat memantulkan kepala mereka di layar, lalu terlihat mengemudi lagi. Gambar flash dan Motion Man terlihat nge-rap sekali lagi. Klip acak diputar dan Mike Shinoda sekali lagi terlihat mengemudi, memegang kamera kabel kecil.

Grup musik rap Memphis Three Six Mafia menyampel lagu ini dalam lagu 2001 Smoke Dat Weed dan masuk dalam album Juicy J 2002 Chronicles of the Juice Man.

Pada 2017 produser Markus Schulz membuat versi trance In the End sebagai tribute-to Chester Bennington setelah kematiannya dan mulai debut di Tomorrowland .[26]
