Gerald Mast (13 Mei 1940 – 1 September 1988) adalah seorang pengarang, sejarawan film, dan anggota fakultas Universitas Chicago. Ia merupakan seorang kontributor untuk disiplin studi film dan sejarah film modern.

Kehidupan dan karier

Mast lahir di Los Angeles pada 1940;[1] keluarganya meliputi ibunya, Bessie, dan Linda, saudarinya.[2] Ia masuk Universitas Chicago, dimana ia meraih gelar sarjana, master dan doktoralnya dalam bidang sastra Inggris.[3] Ia mengajar di New York University, Oberlin College, dan City University of New York, sebelum masuk fakultas almamaternya pada 1978.[2] Ia mengetuai Departemen Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris,[4] dan sumbangannya dari 300 cetakan film mendirikan Arsip Film dan Pusat Studi Film universitas tersebut.[3][5] Pers universitas menerbitkan beberapa bukunya tentang sejarah dan analisis kritikal dari film.[3]

Karya-karyanya berpengaruh dalam pengembangan studi akademik sejarah film, termasuk aplikasi sekolah kritikan kesusastraan Chicago untuk analisis film,[3] dan beberapa bukunya, termasuk A Short History of the Movies dan Film Theory and Criticism, banyak dimasukkan dalam program-program studi film universitas.[2][6]
