Hongbin lahir dan dibesarkan di Jayang-dong, Seoul, Korea Selatan. Ia tinggal bersama orang tua dan dua kakak perempuannya. Hongbin menempuh studi di Baekseok University jurusan Practical Music.

Hongbin adalah salah satu trainee yang menjadi kontestan acara realitas MyDOL di saluran Mnet. Pada akhir acara, ia terpilih menjadi bagian dari grup pria beranggotakan 6 orang dan debut dengan singel "Super Hero"[3] pada 24 Mei 2012[4] di M! Countdown.[5][6] Selama MyDOL, Hongbin tampil di video musik "Let This Die" Brian Joo, "Shake It Up" dan "Tease Me" Seo In-guk.[7][8][9]

Pada tahun 2013, ia muncul dalam episode 4 drama televisi The Heirs bersama rekan-rekan satu grupnya.

2014-Kini: Debut akting dan MC

Pada tahun 2014, Hongbin berperan dalam drama televisi pertamanya sebagai pemeran pendukung bernama Yoo Ji-ho bersama Go Woo-ri dari grup Rainbow di Glorious Day.[2] Pada tahun yang sama, Hongbin dan N muncul sebagai penari latar untuk video musik "Peppermint Chocolate" dari K.Will, Mamamoo dan Wheesung.[10]

Pada 3 Maret 2015, Hongbin bergabung bersama Jiyeon T-ara dan Zhou Mi Super Junior sebagai MC dalam acara SBS MTV The Show.[11] Pada September 2015, Hongbin mendapatkan peran utamanya di drama romansa-aksi Moorim School sebagai Wang Chi Ang, peran yang sebelumnya ditawarkan untuk Yook Sungjae BTOB dan Lee Hyun Woo.[12][13]
