Raja Æthelred (Inggris kuno: Æþelræd, kadang disebut Ethelred, "nobel penasehat") merupakan Raja Wessex dari tahun 865 sampai tahun 871. Ia adalah putra keempat Raja Æthelwulf. Ia menggantikan abangnya, Æthelberht (Ethelbert), sebagai Raja Wessex dan Kent pada tahun 865.[1] Ia menikahi Wulfrida dan memiliki dua orang putra, Æthelwold, yang lebih tua, dan Æthelhelm, yang lebih muda.
Æthelred tidak dapat mengontrol meningkatnya penjarahan bangsa Denmark di Inggris. Pada tanggal 4 Januari 871 di dalam Perang Reading, Ethelred menderita kekalahan berat.[2] Meskipun Æthelred dapat membentuk kembali pasukannya tepat waktu untuk menang di dalam Perang Ashdown,[3] Ia menderita kekalahan lainnya pada tanggal 22 Januari di Perang Basing,[4] dan terbunuh di dalam Perang Merton pada tanggal 23 April 871.
Æthelred dimakamkan di Wimborne di Dorset.[5] Atas kematiannya, ia populer dianggap sebagai seorang santo, tetapi tidak pernah dikanonisasi. Ia digantikan oleh adiknya, Alfred yang Agung.[6]
