Marga Gorontalo merujuk pada aturan pemberian marga (nama keluarga) sebagai identitas dan ikatan kekerabatan sebuah kelompok masyarakat dalam tatanan kehidupan Suku Gorontalo, yang selanjutnya diturunkan dari orang tua kepada anaknya, dari generasi ke generasi.[1]
Marga Gorontalo atau nama keluarga Gorontalo biasanya dilekatkan di belakang nama lengkap sehingga memudahkan masyarakat umum mengenali latar belakang keluarga asal.
Secara umum, marga-marga yang digunakan oleh masyarakat Gorontalo diambil dari silsilah leluhur keluarganya, seperti nama Raja atau nama Kerajaan tempat keluarga tersebut berasal.[2]
Sistem Patrilineal
[sunting | sunting sumber]Marga Gorontalo diturunkan dari generasi ke generasi berdasarkan nama keluarga yang digunakan oleh pihak ayah, sehingga nama anak dari sebuah keluarga akan ditambahkan nama keluarga sang ayah di belakangnya.[3] Dengan sistem patrilineal ini, nama keluarga sang ayah tidak dapat diturunkan ke generasi selanjutnya melalui nama marga yang dimiliki oleh pihak perempuan atau ibu. Misalnya pihak Ayah memiliki marga Gobel, serta pihak ibu memiliki marga Datau. Dalam konteks ini, marga yang dapat diwariskan hanyalah marga Gobel, sedangkan marga Datau tidak dapat diwariskan kepada generasi selanjutnya.
Meskipun begitu, masyarakat Gorontalo biasanya turut menyertakan nama marga dari keluarga besar kedua belah pihak (laki-laki dan perempuan) saat prosesi pernikahan digelar. Misalnya saja pengantin yang memiliki hajatan berasal dari Keluarga Gobel dan Keluarga Datau, maka masyarakat dapat menyebut kedua marga tersebut (Gobel - Datau) sebagai klan yang berbahagia saat acara pernikahan digelar.
