Robert P. Brenner (lahir 28 November 1943, New York) adalah dosen sejarah dan direktur Center for Social Theory and Comparative History at UCLA, redaktur jurnal sosialis Against the Current, dan anggota dewan redaksi New Left Review. Bidang penelitiannya adalah sejarah Eropa modern awal; sejarah ekonomi, sosial, dan agama; sejarah agraria, teori sosial/Marxisme; dan Inggris zaman Tudor–Stuart.[1]
Ia memberi sumbangan terhadap perdebatan di kalangan Marxis mengenai "Transisi dari Feodalisme ke Kapitalisme". Ia menekankan bahwa transisi ini disebabkan oleh transformasi produksi pertanian di Eropa, khususnya di pedesaan Inggris, alih-alih kebangkitan perdagangan internasional.[butuh rujukan] Artikelnya yang berjudul "Agrarian class structure and economic development in pre-industrial Europe" (1976) menjadi dasar "tesis Brenner" yang kontroversial.[2] Ia berpendapat bahwa petani kecil memiliki hak properti yang kuat dan insentif yang sedikit sehingga enggan meninggalkan teknologi tradisional atau mencari pasar lain; petani tersebut tidak punya alasan untuk terlibat dalam kapitalisme.
