Bintang ini mendapat perhatian setelah Gliese 581 c, eksoplanet yang ditemukan terletak di dekat zona laik hidup bintang ini pada April 2007.
Pada akhir September 2010. telah dketemukan lagi dua planet yang mengelilingi bintang ini, yaitu Gliese 581 f dan g.
