Chick Corea yang memiliki nama asli Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (12 Juni 1941 – 9 Februari 2021) adalah salah seorang pianis jazz asal Amerika. Ia termasuk pianis yang muncul pada era 60-an, dan termasuk pembawa warna baru pada dunia piano jazz modern di Amerika. Permainan pianonya terdengar memiliki ciri khas dengan unsur nada-nada Spanyol, hingga menjadi ciri yang mudah dikenali. Gaya bermainnya termasuk yang paling banyak ditiru setelah Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, McCoy Tyner dan Herbie Hancock. Komposisi ciptaannya yang berjudul "Spain" pernah terkenal pada tahun 80-an.

Chick Corea meninggal dunia pada tanggal 9 Februari 2021 di rumahnya, di Tampa Bay, Florida, akibat penyakit kanker yang dideritanya.[1][2]

Perjalanan karier

Chick Corea mulai bermain piano sejak usia 4 tahun, ia sangat terpengaruh oleh Bud Powell dan Horace Silver. Ia mendapatkan pengalaman yang sangat berharga, saat pertama bermain bersama Mongo Santamaria dan Willie Bobo di antara tahun (1962-1963), Blue Mitchell (1964-1966), Herbie Mann, dan Stan Getz. Pertama membuat album, di mana ia menjadi pimpinan grup musiknya, yaitu pada tahun 1966 dengan album yang berjudul "Tones for Joan's Bones". Kemudian pada tahun 1968, ia memiliki trio jazz bersama Miroslav Vitous dan Roy Haynes, menghasilkan album "Now He Sings, Now He Sobs". Setelah itu ia juga sempat bermain dengan Sarah Vaughan, bergabung bersama Miles Davis menggantikan posisi Herbie Hancock. Ia bertahan di grup Miles Davis di periode transisi yang sangat bersejarah, yaitu antara tahun 1968-1970. Ia dibujuk oleh salah seorang peniup trompet untuk bermain piano elektrik, yang akhirnya menghasilkan seperti Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew, dan Miles Davis at the Fillmore. Setelah ia meninggalkan Miles Davis, Chick Corea memilih untuk bermain avant-garde, bersama Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland, dan Barry Altschul lahirlah album "Circle", dengan formasi kwartet. Namun di akhir 1971, ia berganti arah musik lagi.[3]

Setelah album "Circle", Chick Corea sempat beramain bersama Stan Getz namun hanya untuk beberapa waktu. dan kemudian ia membentuk Return to Forever. Awalnya Return to Forever adalah sebuah grup dengan warna khas Brasil, bersama Stanley Clarke, Joe Farrell, Airto Moreira, dan Flora Purim. Namun dalam waktu setahun, warna grup musik tersebut berubah menjadi grup musik fusion yang keras, bersama Stanley Clarke, Bill Connors, dan Lenny White, (Al DiMeola menggantikan posisi Connors' pada tahun 1974). Ketika itu musik Return To Forever berubah arah, hingga terasa ada warna rock yang kuat tetapi mempertahankan improvisasi jazz sehingga warnanya sangat menyolok dan mudah dikenali, meskipun banyak menggunakan instrumen elektrik. Di akhir 1970, ketika Return To Forever bubar, Chick Corea masih sering terlibat bersama Stanley Clarke dalam penggarapan rekaman Big Band. Selama beberapa waktu setelah itu, Chick Corea terus bereksplorasi dengan beberapa grup musik jazz yang berbeda-beda gaya bermusiknya, antara lain; ia sempat membuat album bersama vibrafonis Gary Burton, kadang bermain duet menggunakan dua piano dengan bersama Herbie Hancock, bermain dalam Kwartet bersama Michael Brecker, bermain dalam Trio bersama Miroslav Vitous dan Roy Haynes, membuat album atribut kepada Thelonious monk dan juga beberapa rekaman musik klasik.[3]

Pada tahun 1985, Chick Corea membentuk sebuah grup musik fusion baru yang diberi nama Chick Corea Elektric Band. Pada grup ini Chick Corea menampilkan pemain-pemain baru yang terbilang masih fresh dalam dunia jazz, seperti John Patitucci, Scott Henderson (kemudian posisinya digantikan oleh Frank Gambale), pemain saksofon Eric Marienthal, dan pemain drum Dave Weckl. Untuk tetap bisa menjaga keseimbangan permainannya dalam piano akustik, beberapa tahun setelah itu Chick membentuk grup Trio akustik jazz bersama John Patitucci dan Dave Weckl.

Ketika Patitucci meninggalkannya pada awal tahun 1990, personel Chick Corea akustik band berganti, tetapi Chick Corea tetap terus bermain dengan beberapa grup musik termasuk dengan Bob Berg dan Patitucci. Antara tahun 1996-1997, Chick Corea tur bersama Kwintet jazznya, termasuk di dalamnya Kenny Garrett (saksofon) dan Wallace Roney (drum), yang memainkan komposisi-komposisi versi baru dari pianis Bud Powell dan Thelonious Monk. Chick Corea menampilkan sisi-sisi bersejarah yang penting dari grup-grupnya, termasuk yang terdahulu dalam bentuk rekaman jazz.[3]

Di awal abad 20 Chick Corea memulai dengan membuat rekaman-rekaman antar lain; 2 CD piano solo, Piano Solo: Originals dan Piano Solo: Standards, kemudian juga album "Past, Present & Futures" pada tahun 2001. Album "Rendezvous in New York" di rilis pada tahun 2003, " To the Stars" tahun 2004. "Chick Corea The Ultimate Adventure" dirilis pada tahun 2006.[3]
