Dalam mitologi Yunani, Orfeus (Ὀρφεύς) adalah seorang penyanyi, penyair, dan pemusik yang handal.^[1]^[2]^[3]^[4]^[5]^[6]^[7]^[8] Nyanyian dan permainan liranya mampu memesona dan memikat hati banyak makhluk, termasuk Hades. Orfeus adalah anak dari dewa sungai, Oiagros,.^[9] dan Kalliope, seorang Mousai.^[10]^[11]^[12]

Dalam mitologi

Orfeus pernah berpetualang bersama Iason dalam rombongan Argonautnya. Suatu ketika para Argonaut berpapasan dengan para Siren (makhluk bersayap yang membuai para pelaut dengan nyanyian mereka dan menghancurkan kapal para pelaut). Para Siren tersebut lalu bernyanyi untuk memikat para Argonaut namun Orfeus langsung mengambil liranya dan memainkan lagu yang lebih merdu daripada nyanyian para Siren. Para Siren yang merasa kalah akhirnya pergi.

Orfeus pernah pergi ke dunia bawah untuk membawa kembali kekasihnya, Euridike, yang meninggal karena gigitan ular. Di dunia bawah, Hades dan Persefon terpesona pada musik Orfeus dan mengabulkan permintaan Oerfeus dengan satu syarat: Orfeus harus berjalan di depan Euridike dan tidak boleh menengok ke belakang sebelum sampai di dunia atas. Namun dalam perjalannya menuju dunia atas Orfeus menoleh ke belakang sehingga Euridike pun hilang dan kembali ke dunia bawah, kali ini untuk selamanya.

Orfeus meninggal dengan cara dibunuh oleh para Mainad karena tidak menghormati dewa Dionisos.
