The Hobbit adalah seri tiga film epik fantasi-petualangan yang disutradarai, ditulis, dan diproduseri Peter Jackson dan didasarkan pada novel fantasi karya J. R. R. Tolkien berjudul The Hobbit (1937). Film-film ini diberi judul sesuai subjudul dalam novel, An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), dan The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).

Seri ini merupakan prekuel dari trilogi film The Lord of the Rings. Beberapa aktor The Lord of the Rings akan muncul kembali, termasuk Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, dan Orlando Bloom. Turut serta dalam pembuatan film ini adalah penulis Fran Walsh dan Philippa Boyens, ilustrator John Howe dan Alan Lee, pengarah seni Dan Hennah, dan sinematografer Andrew Lesnie. Seperti trilogi pertamanya, perlengkapan akan ditangani Weta Workshop dan efek visualnya dibuat oleh Weta Digital. Selain itu, komponis Howard Shore, yang membuat musik The Lord of the Rings, akan membuat lagi musik untuk seri film ini.[2] Keikusertaan terbaru dan paling penting dalam pembuatan seri The Hobbit ini adalah Guillermo del Toro sebagai penulis, yang pada awalnya ditunjuk sebagai sutradara.

Berlatar di dunia fiksi Dunia Tengah, tiga film ini mengikuti perjalanan hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), yang ditugaskan penyihir penyihir Gandalf (Ian McKellen), untuk menemani 13 kurcaci yang dipimpin Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) dalam perjalanan merebut kembali Pegunungan Sunyi dari naga Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Film pertama dari seri ini tayang perdana di Embassy Theatre di Wellington, Selandia Baru pada tanggal 28 November 2012.[3] Sekitar 100.000 orang diperkirakan berdiri di samping karpet merah di Courtenay Place, dan seluruh rangkaian acara disiarkan langsung melalui televisi di Selandia Baru dan juga Internet.[4]

Pengambilan gambar utama dimulai tanggal 21 Maret 2011 di Wellington, Selandia Baru. Pembuatan film dilakukan di Wellington Stone Street Studios, kota Matamata dan sejumlah tempat rahasia di seluruh Selandia Baru.[9]

Kostum untuk setiap Kurcaci meliputi enam wig dan delapan janggut, yang dipakai oleh para aktor, pemeran pengganti, dan cadangan.[10]

Pada Juli 2011, sejumlah adegan The Hobbit direkam di Pinewood Studios, Inggris. Latarnya dibangun di F Stage dan N&P Stages untuk keperluan pembuatan film.[11] Jackson merekam video blog dari tempat tersebut yang menampilkan Christopher Lee lengkap dengan tata rias dan kostumnya sebagai Saruman.[11][12]

Blok syuting kedua di Selandia Baru dimulai pada akhir Agustus dan selesai bulan Desember 2011.[13]
