Cathay Pacific (Hanzi: 國泰航空公司; Pinyin: Guótài Hángkōng Gōngsī, SEHK: 0293) adalah sebuah maskapai penerbangan nasional Hong Kong yang berpusat di Bandar Udara Internasional Hong Kong. Cathay Pacific dan anak perusahaannya memiliki layanan penumpang dan kargo terjadwal ke lebih dari 190[1] destinasi di lebih dari 60 negara di seluruh dunia, termasuk codeshare dan joint venture. Pada tahun 2010, Cathay Pacific dan Cathay Pacific Cargo, bersama dengan Cathay Dragon (dulu bernama Dragonair), mengangkut hampir 27 juta penumpang dan lebih dari 1,8 juta ton kargo dan surat. Cathay Pacific adalah maskapai penerbangan terbesar kelima di dunia berdasarkan penjualan, dan terbesar keempat belas diukur berdasarkan kapitalisasi pasar.[2] Pada tahun 2010, Cathay Pacific menjadi maskapai kargo internasional terbesar di dunia, bersama dengan hub utama Bandara Internasional Hong Kong sebagai bandara tersibuk di dunia diukur dengan lalu lintas kargo.[3] Per Maret 2021, pemegang saham utama Cathay Pacific adalah Swire Group dengan saham sebesar 42,3%, dan Air China dengan saham 28,2%.
Sejarah
[sunting | sunting sumber]Cathay Pacific Airlines didirikan pada 24 September 1947 di Hong Kong dengan Sydney de Kantzow, Roy Farrell, Neil Buchanan, Donald Brittan Evans, dan Robert Stanley Russell sebagai pemegang saham awalnya.[4] Buchanan dan Russell sudah bekerja untuk de Kantzow dan Farrell di Roy Farrell Import-Export Company, pendahulu Cathay Pacific, yang awalnya berpusat di Shanghai.[5] Farrell membeli pesawat pertama maskapai, Douglas DC-3, dan memulai layanan penerbangan pada 28 Januari 1946 dari Sydney ke Shanghai, setelah Farrell dan Russell menerbangkan pesawat ke Australia dan memperoleh lisensi untuk mengangkut barang (tetapi bukan penumpang) pada awal bulan itu.[6] Mereka kemudian menambah penerbangan berjadwalnya ke Singapura, Manila, dan Bangkok.
Kepemilikian Swire Group di Cathay diawali pada tahun 1948 saat Butterfield & Swires memiliki saham minoritas di Cathay dan kemudian terus berkembang hingga akhirnya mencapai 52%. Sejak saat itu, Cathay Pacific mengalami perkembangan pesat pada 1960-an, 70-an, dan 80-an. Krisis ekonomi di akhir 1990-an membuat Cathay harus melakukan reorganisasi dan membuat identitas baru.
Pada tahun 2010, maskapai ini mencatat rekor laba tinggi lainnya, sebesar HK$14,05 miliar meskipun rekor kerugian juga terjadi di dekade yang sama. Pada saat yang sama, Cathay Pacific telah menerima pengiriman beberapa jenis pesawat baru, termasuk Airbus A330-300 dan Boeing 777-300ER.[7] Pada tahun 2014, maskapai ini memperluas jaringannya dalam beberapa tahun terakhir dengan menambahan jaringan ke Manchester, Zürich, dan Boston.
Pada tahun 2021, maskapai mencatat rekor kerugian tahunan sebesar $2,8 miliar pada tahun 2020 karena pembatasan selama pandemi COVID-19. Juga diumumkan bahwa maskapai akan memangkas 8.500 pegawai.[8]
