Korean Air (Korea: 주식회사 대한항공, Hanja: 株式會社 大韓航空, Alih aksara: Jusikhoesa Daehan Hanggong) adalah nama maskapai penerbangan nasional Korea Selatan. Maskapai ini bermarkas di Gonghang-dong, Gangseo-gu di Seoul.[3] Maskapai ini berdiri tahun 1962, menggantikan Korean National Airlines yang didirikan tahun 1948 ketika Korea merdeka dari penjajahan Jepang.
Korean Air melayani destinasi 126 kota di 44 negara, sedangkan divisi domestiknya melayani 13 tujuan. Ini adalah salah satu dari 20 maskapai penerbangan teratas di dunia dalam hal penumpang yang dibawa dan juga salah satu maskapai kargo internasional teratas. Terminal 2 Bandara Internasional Incheon berfungsi sebagai hub internasional Korean Air. Korean Air juga mengelola kampus markas satelit di Incheon. Mayoritas pilot, staf darat, dan pramugari Korean Air berbasis di Seoul. Maskapai ini memiliki sekitar 20.540 karyawan per Desember 2014.[4]
Sejarah
[sunting | sunting sumber]Mulanya, maskapai ini dimiliki oleh pemerintah Korsel. Namun, tahun 1969 maskapai ini diprivatisasi dan menjadi bagian dari Hanjin Group. Penerbangan internasional perdana dilaksanakan tanggal 26 April 1971 (kargo). Sementara penerbangan internasional penumpang perdana dilaksanakan setahun kemudian, tepatnya tanggal 19 April 1972 dengan rute Seoul-Los Angeles. Pesawat Boeing 707 digunakan dalam rute internasional seperti Hong Kong, Taiwan, dan Los Angeles hingga KAL membeli Boeing 747 tahun 1973. Rute-rute Asia dilayani dengan pesawat Airbus A300 yang dibeli tahun 1975.[5]
Pada 1 Maret 1984 KAL memperkenalkan livery (corak) baru dengan warna biru - abu-abu (biru di atas badan dan abu-abu di perut pesawat) dengan logo baru "Korean Air" dengan lambang "taegukki", menggantikan nama "Korean Air Lines". Pada tahun 1970 hingga 1999. Korean Air mengalami banyak kecelakaan fatal (sekitar 16 pesawat KAL jatuh pada masa ini, yang terburuk antara lain Korean Air Penerbangan 007) sehingga memiliki citra buruk pada masa itu, yang sangat memengaruhi performa maskapai ini. Namun setelah itu tingkat keselamatan penerbangan diperbaiki dan maskapai ini menjadi salah satu maskapai teraman di dunia dengan citra yang semakin baik.[6] (meskipun citra buruk "sering kecelakaan" masih terasa hingga sekarang)
Pada tanggal 23 Juni 2000, bersama dengan Aeroméxico, Air France, dan Delta Air Lines, Korean Air adalah salah satu pendiri aliansi maskapai penerbangan utama dunia, SkyTeam dan SkyTeam Cargo, yang didirikan pada 28 September 2000.[7]
Korean Air merupakan salah satu dari beberapa maskapai dengan rating bintang empat dari Skytrax (Beberapa maskapai bintang empat lainnya adalah Japan Airlines, Thai Airways International, Turkish Airlines, dan South African Airways).[8] Pesaing utama maskapai ini adalah Asiana Airlines, yang merupakan sedikit dari maskapai dengan rating bintang lima, juga dari Skytrax.
Akuisisi Asiana Airlines
[sunting | sunting sumber]Pada 16 November 2020, Pemerintah Korea Selatan secara resmi mengumumkan bahwa Korean Air akan mengakuisisi Asiana Airlines.[9] Korea Development Bank, sebuah bank milik negara, akan memberikan 800 miliar won kepada Hanjin Group untuk membantu membiayai merger antara maskapai penerbangan.[9] Kementerian Agraria, Infrastruktur dan Transportasi Korea Selatan akan mengintegrasikan anak perusahaan Air Busan, Air Seoul, dan Jin Air untuk membentuk gabungan maskapai berbiaya rendah yang akan beroperasi dengan fokus pada bandara regional di Korea.[10]
Pada Maret 2021, KAL mengumumkan merger dengan Asiana Airlines akan ditunda karena otoritas asing belum menyetujui kesepakatan tersebut. Karena penundaan tersebut, Asiana Airlines akan dioperasikan sebagai anak perusahaan dimana operasi maskapai, IT dan sistem lainnya akan dioperasikan oleh Korean Air hingga tahun 2024.[11] Setelah merger disetujui dan diselesaikan, Asiana Airlines dapat menjadi anggota SkyTeam.[12] Sejak 9 September, Turki telah menyetujui kesepakatan antimonopoli, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam juga telah menyetujui merger.[13] Sementara negara-negara penting lainnya seperti Korea Selatan, Tiongkok, Jepang, dan Amerika Serikat belum memberikan persetujuan mereka. Pada 30 Juni, dilaporkan bahwa rencana pasca-merger antara dua maskapai telah diselesaikan dan disetujui oleh Korea Development Bank.[14]
Pada tahun 2023, Korean Air disertifikasi sebagai maskapai penerbangan berbintang 5 oleh Skytrax, sebuah organisasi pemeringkatan transportasi udara.[15]
