Kaneko lahir di sebuah keluarga samurai dari Domain Fukuoka (distrik Sawara, provinsi Chikuzen, sekarang Chūō-ku, Fukuoka). Pada usia 9 tahun, ia mulai menuntut ilmu di Shuyukan.[1]
