Richard Lynn dan Karen Anne Carpenter dilahirkan di New Haven, Connecticut, Amerika Serikat dan tinggal di 55 Hall Street; Richard pada 15 Oktober 1946 dan Karen pada 2 Maret 1950. Bersama orang tua mereka Harold dan Agnes, kedua bersaudara ini pindah ke California pada 1963 dan menetap di suburbia Downey, bagian dari Los Angeles. Rumah mereka di 13024 Fidler Avenue belakangan digusur sebagai bagian dari proyek 105 Century Freeway.
