Personal life

Lahir di Los Angeles, California, dia merupakan putera bungu dari Martha Louis (1920-2005) asal Mississippi dan komposer Alfred Newman (1901-1970), yang memenangi enam kali penghargaanOscars untuk Best Film Score. Dia merupakan salah satu anggota dinasti komposer film di Hollywood termasuk ayahnya, dan kakak laki-lakinya, David Newman, kakak perempuannya Maria Newman, pamannya, Lionel Newman dan Emil Newman, sepupunya, Randy Newman (yang juga dikenal sebagai penulis lagu dan penyanyi), and his keponakan Joey Newman.
