Invasi Jepang ke Malaya dimulai tepat setelah tengah malam pada 8 Desember 1941 (waktu lokal) sebelum serangan Pearl Harbor. Peristiwa tersebut merupakan pertempuran utama pertama pada Perang Pasifik,[11] dan pertarungan antara pasukan bawah tanah Angkatan Darat India Britania dan Kekaisaran Jepang.

Kota Bharu, ibukota negara bagian Kelantan di pesisir timur laut Malaysia, pada 1941, merupakan pangkalan operasi Pasukan Udara Kerajaan Inggris dan Pasukan Udara Kerajaan Australia di Utara Malaya.
