LibriVox adalah suatu kelompok relawan di seluruh dunia yang membaca dan merekam teks domain publik, membuat domain publik gratis audiobooks (buku audio) untuk diunduh dari situs web mereka perpustakaan digital dan situs hosting lain di internet. Didirikan pada tahun 2005 oleh Hugh McGuire untuk memberikan "Pembebasan akustik buku-buku ke dalam domain publik"[1] dan LibriVox tujuannya adalah "Untuk membuat semua buku-buku dalam domain publik tersedia, secara gratis, dalam format audio di internet".[2]

LibriVox dimulai pada bulan Agustus 2005 oleh penulis berbasis Montreal, Hugh McGuire, yang mendirikan sebuah blog, dan mengajukan pertanyaan di atas.[4][5] Buku pertama yang tercatat[6] adalah The Secret Agent (Agen Rahasia) oleh Joseph Conrad.
Fitur utama cara kerja LibriVox hanya berubah sedikit dibandingkan awalnya, meskipun teknologi yang mendukungnya telah ditingkatkan berkat upaya para relawan yang berketerampilan pengembangan jaringan.
Etimologi dari LibriVox
LibriVox adalah kata ciptaan yang terinspirasi oleh kata-kata bahasa Latin liber (buku) dalam genitive form libri dan vox (suara), memberikan arti BookVoice (atau suara buku). Kata itu juga diciptakan karena konotasi lain: liber juga berarti anak dan bebas/gratis, independen, tidak terikat. Sebagai LibriVox forum mengatakan: "Kami suka berpikir LibriVox bisa diartikan sebagai 'anak dari suara', dan 'suara bebas'. Akhirnya, kaitan lain yang kita sukai adalah 'library' ("perpustakaan") jadi Anda bisa membayangkannya berarti Perpustakaan Suara."[7]
Belum ada keputusan atau kesepakatan antara para pendiri LibriVox atau komunitas relawan mengenai satu pengucapan dari LibriVox. Diterima bahwa setiap bunyi pengucapan adalah akurat.[8]
Isi
LibriVox hanya mencatat bahan yang ada di domain publik di Amerika Serikat, dan semua buku-buku LibriVox dirilis dengan dedikasi domain publik. Karena pembatasan hak cipta, LibriVox hanya menghasilkan rekaman dalam jumlah terbatas untuk buku-buku kontemporer. Hal ini termasuk, misalnya, Laporan Komisi 9/11.
