Sylvia atricapilla adalah spesies burung warbler yang umum dan tersebar luas. Burung ini terutama memiliki bulu bagian atas berwarna abu-abu zaitun dan bagian bawah abu-abu pucat. Mereka umumnya memiliki perbedaan kecil diantara lima subspesiesnya. baik burung jantan maupun betina memiliki topi berwarna dengan batas warna yang kentara di kepala, pada jantan berwarna hitam dan coklat kemerahan pada betina. Kicauan khas burung jantan berupa suara yang kaya akan nada, sering berakhir dengan crescendo bernada tinggi yang keras, tetapi lagu yang lebih sederhana ditemukan di beberapa daerah terpencil, seperti lembah di Pegunungan Alpen. Kerabat terdekat blackcap adalah warbler taman, yang terlihat sangat berbeda tetapi memiliki kicau yang mirip.
