Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) dikemukakan oleh Chris Newhall dari U.S. Geological Survey dan Steve Self dari Universitas Hawaii tahun 1982 untuk menyediakan pengukuran relatif dari besarnya letusan gunung berapi.
