Partai Whig adalah partai politik yang aktif di awal abad ke-19 di Amerika Serikat. Empat Presiden Amerika Serikat adalah anggota Partai Whig. Partai ini adalah bagian dari sistem partai kedua dan beroperasi dari tahun 1830-an sampai pertengahan tahun 1850-an.[1]
Partai ini dibentuk untuk menentang kebijakan Presiden Andrew Jackson dan Partai Demokrat. Secara khusus, Whig mendukung supremasi kongres atas lembaga kepresidenan dan mempopulerkan program modernisasi dan proteksionisme ekonomi.
Nama ini dipilih untuk menggemakan American Whig pada tahun 1776, yang berjuang untuk kemerdekaan, dan karena "Whig" kemudian menjadi slogan pilihan yang diakui secara luas bagi orang-orang yang diidentifikasi sebagai penentang tirani.[2]
