Zico lahir di Mapo, Seoul pada 14 September 1992.[1] Zico bersekolah di Seoul Music High School dengan jurusan penampilan vokal.[5] Dalam liriknya dari lagu "Release," ia menyatakan bahwa ia menghabiskan satu tahun belajar di luar negeri baik di Kanada maupun Tiongkok, serta tiga tahun di Jepang.[6]

Zico memulai kariernya sebagai penyanyi rap di kancah hip hop bawah tanah. Pada awal masa remajanya, ia dan Rap Monster merupakan bagian dari suatu kru hip-hop.[7][8] Ia menggunakan nama panggung "Nacseo" (Hangul: 낙서) di kancah hip hop bawah tanah Jepang bersama kru "Dope Squad" dan "Undisputed."[9] Zico telah mengkonfirmasi bahwa saat remaja, ia mengikuti audisi SM Entertainment.[10]

Ia resmi debut sebagai duo bersama Park Kyung di bawah nama "The Harmonics" di Korea pada tahun 2009 dengan singel digital berjudul "The Letter."[9] Pada tahun yang sama, ia bergabung dengan Stardom Entertainment.[11] Zico tampil menyanyikan bagian rap untuk lagu IU yang berjudul "Marshmallow."
