Pada September 2001, saat serangan 11 September, Presiden AS George W. Bush berkata: "Wajah teror bukanlah kepercayaan Islam yang sebenarnya. Itu semua bukanlah mengenai Islam. Islam itu damai. Para teroris itu tidak mewakili damai. Mereka mewakili kejahatan dan perang."[2] Hal ini mendatangkan kritikan dari beberapa pihak[3] dan jajak pendapat para pemimpin Protestan Evangelikal Amerika Serikat yang dilakukan pada 2002 menyatakan bahwa hanya 10% yang sepakat dengan perkataan Bush bahwa Islam itu damai.[4]
Mahathir bin Mohamad, mantan Perdana Menteri Malaysia berkata pada 2002, "Islam, seperti yang kukatakan, adalah sebuah agama damai. Namun sepanjang berabad-abad, tantangan-tantangan dari pengajaran Islam yang sebenarnya terjadi. Sehingga [orang-orang yang menyebut diri mereka sendiri] "Muslim" membunuh disamping melukai agama mereka yang menentang pembunuhan khususnya orang-orang tak bersalah.[5]
Dalil Boubakeur, mufti Masjid Paris, berkata pada 2006, "Nabi tidak mendirikan sebuah agama teroris, namun agama damai."[6]
Kritikan
Sherman Jackson meyakini bahwa komentar-komentar para politikus Barat tentang Islam adalah agama damai adalah sebuah upaya pembenaran politik. Namun, Jackson menyatakan bahwa pernyataan tersebut tidak menyangkal kekerasan dari Islam, namun lebih kepada keberadaan damai dengan non-Muslim. [7]

Pada 13 Mei 2015, Negara Islam Irak dan Syam mengeluarkan sebuah pesan audio dari Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, yang menyatakan bahwa Islam bukanlah agama damai, namun agama perang. [12]

The defeatists should fear Allah lest they distort this religion and cause it to become weak on the basis of the claim that it is a religion of peace. Yes, it is the religion of peace but in the sense of saving all of mankind from worshiping anything other than Allah and submitting all of mankind to the rule of Allah.
