Dahulu kala sebutan ini ditujukan untuk warga kulit putih dari golongan pekerja kasar yang berasal dari pedesaan yang berperilaku dan bertutur kata kasar. Karena mereka umumnya pekerja lapangan, maka kulit lehernya kemerahan terbakar matahari. Sebutan ini tetap dipakai secara guyonan bagi warga negara-negara bagian di selatan AS.

Redneck adalah kata penghinaan untuk menggambarkan anggota kelas sosial pekerja berkulit putih di daerah pedesaan, terutama yang tinggal di negara bagian wilayah selatan Amerika Serikat.

Selain itu redneck bisa juga dipakai sebagai istilah yang merujuk pada orang-orang yang sangat konservatif secara politik. Redneck juga biasanya berpandangan sempit dan tidak miliki rasa toleransi atas pendapat berbeda.
