Kereta api Serayu merupakan kereta api kelas ekonomi unggulan yang melayani perjalanan Purwokerto - Pasar Senen, dijalankan dua kali sehari (pagi dan malam). Kereta api Serayu juga dikenal dengan nama Cipuja/Citrajaya. Saat ini kereta api ini menjadi satu-satunya kereta api yang beroperasi dari Jakarta ke Jawa Tengah dengan rute melintasi Bandung dan tidak melintasi Cirebon.

Stasiun-stasiun pemberhentian kereta api ini antara lain Stasiun Purwokerto, Kroya, Maos, Gandrungmangun, Sidareja, Banjar, Ciamis, Tasikmalaya, Ciawi, Cipeundeuy, Cibatu, Kiaracondong, Cimahi, Plered, Purwakarta, Cikampek, Jatinegara dan Pasarsenen.

Mulai 1 April 2015, KA Serayu tidak mengakhiri perjalanannya di stasiun Jakarta Kota, melainkan di stasiun Pasar Senen.

Asal usul istilah

Nama KA Serayu berasal dari nama sungai salah satu sungai di Jawa Tengah.Yang Membentang dari timur laut ke barat daya sejauh 181 km, sungai ini melintasi lima kabupaten yakni Kabupaten Wonosobo, Kabupaten Banjarnegara, Kabupaten Purbalingga, Kabupaten Banyumas, hingga bermuara di Samudra Hindia di wilayah Kabupaten Cilacap. Perlu diketahui bahwa kereta api Serayu ini melewati dua Jembatan Kali Serayu pada setiap perjalanannya, salah satunya terletak dekat Stasiun Maos dan satu lagi di diantara Stasiun Notog dan Stasiun Kebasen.

Sejarah

Kereta api Serayu diresmikan pada tahun 1985. Awalnya kereta itu bernama Cepat Sidareja. Nama KA kemudian berubah menjadi KA Cipuja, sementara perjalanan malamnya diberi nama Citrajaya (Cilacap-Jakarta Raya) dan rutenya diperpanjang ke Cilacap dan Jakarta. Pada dasawarsa 2000-an berubah menjadi KA Serayu hingga saat ini. Sementara itu, kereta api Galuh melayani rute Tanahabang-Banjar dan khusus diperuntukkan bagi penumpang yang tidak terangkut oleh kereta api Cipuja atau Citrajaya.

Pada tahun 2013, perjalanan KA Serayu diperpanjang sampai Stasiun Purwokerto.
