MiG-29 adalah pesawat yang dibuat oleh biro Mikoyan-Gurovich (MiG) Rusia,dirancang untuk mengganti pesawat MiG-21, MiG-23, Su-15 and Su-17. Dimana kemampuannya sama dengan pesawat tempur Amerika Serikat F-18 Hornet. MiG-29 menggabungkan sebanyak mungkin antara ukuran besar dan dalamnya (larger and deeper) leading-edge root extensions (LERXs) yang memungkinkan manuver dengan sudut serang yang tinggi. Pada ujung sayap (leading edge) terdapat kisi-kisi tambahan untuk lubang masuk udara dimana berguna ketika lubang masuk udara (inlet) tertutup ketika di darat dan terbuka ketika take off (mengudara). Tekhnik ini berguna untuk menghindari kotoran dan debu masuk ke dalam mesin ketika berada di taxi way menjelang lepas landas atau mendarat, yang dapat merusakkannya.
Hidung pesawat yang berukuran cukup besar dimaksudkan untuk menempatkan radar yang berdaya jangkau tinggi serta berkemampuan lihat-tembak-bawah (look-shoot-down), penuntun laser dan perlatan sensor inframerah serta memnempatkan helmet-mounted target-designation system. Sekalipun tidak dilengkapi dengan sistem kontrol fly-by-wire sebagaimana F-16 misalnya, MiG-29 Fulcrum memiliki kemampuan untuk menghadapi pesawat pesawat tempur buatan barat.
Pesawat MiG-29 S adalah hasil upgrade (penambahan kemampuan) dengan sistem avionik, penambahan ukuran fuselage (badan pesawat) yang memungkinkan memiliki kapasitas bahan bakar yang lebih banyak. Salah satu varian lanjut adlah MiG-29 M yang dilengkapi dengan kontrol fly by wire dan dilengkapi dengan HUD (head up display) dan peralatan kokpit pesawat secara digital (glass cockpit). Pada model ini, peralatan pintu tambahan pada lubang masuk udara (air intake) dibuang karena dianggap membebani seperti pada model model terdahulu
Angkatan laut Uni Soviet menggunakan pesawat jenis ini yang dipasang pada kapal induk kelas Admiral Kuznetsov dengan tipe MiG 29 K. Selain tipe Sukhoi SU-33.
