Halimah Yacob berasal dari ayah keturunan [[Orang India|India]] dan ibu keturunan [[Suku Melayu|Melayu]]. Halimah binti Yacob (Jawi: حاليمه بنت ياچوب; lahir 23 Agustus 1954) adalah seorang politikus Singapura[2] dan Presiden Singapura saat ini. Memulai karier politik sebagai seorang anggota partai pemerintah Partai Aksi Rakyat (PAP), dia menjabat sebagai Ketua Parlemen Singapura ke-9,[3] dari Januari 2013 hingga Agustus 2017. Ia adalah wanita pertama yang menduduki posisi ini dalam sejarah Republik Singapura. Ia adalah orang ketiga yang menjadi Ketua Parlemen dari ras minoritas secara berturut-turut, setelah Abdullah Tarmugi dan Michael Palmer.[4] Dia adalah Anggota Parlemen mewakili Perwakilan Konstituensi Kelompok Jurong antara 2001 dan 2015, dan Perwakilan Konstituensi Kelompok Marsiling-Yew Tee antara 2015 dan 2017.
Pada 7 Agustus 2017, dia mengundurkan diri dari jabatannya sebagai ketua dan anggota dan dari keanggotaannya di PAP untuk maju sebagai kandidat dalam Pemilihan Presiden Singapura 2017.[5] Pada tanggal 13 September 2017, Yacob dinyatakan sebagai Presiden terpilih melalui sebuah pemilihan walkover, karena tidak ada calon presiden lainnya yang dikeluarkan Sertifikat Kelayakan.[6][7] Dia dilantik keesokan harinya, [8] menjadi presiden wanita pertama dalam sejarah negara ini.[9]
Kehidupan awal dan pendidikan
Halimah Yacob berasal dari ayah keturunan India dan ibu keturunan Melayu. Ayahnya adalah seorang penjaga yang meninggal saat ia berusia delapan tahun, meninggalkannya dibesarkan oleh ibunya.[10][11][12]
Halimah Yacob belajar di Sekolah Wanita China Singapura dan Sekolah Wanita Tanjong Katong. Halimah kecil juga tak malu ketika harus membantu ibunya yang dulu berjualan nasi padang hanya dengan gerobak kecil.[13] Semasa sekolah, Halimah adalah anak yang cerdas, terbukti dengan di terimanya dia di dua sekolah bergengsi di Singapura tingkat SMP dan SMA. Dia adalah segelintir wanita Melayu yang pada waktu itu di terima di SMP Singapore Chinese Girl's School yang didominasi oleh wanita beretnis Tionghoa, lalu pada masa SMA dia bersekolah di Tanjong Katong Girls' School. Kemudian dia melanjutkan di Fakultas Hukum Universitas Singapura (Universitas Singapura) yang sangat bergengsi di Singapura di mana dia menyelesaikan gelar LLB (Hons.) pada tahun 1978.[13]
Dia dipanggil ke Lembaga Hukum Singapura pada tahun 1981. Pada tahun 2001, dia menyelesaikan gelar LLM di Universitas Nasional Singapura, dan dianugerahi gelar Doktor Kehormatan dari UNS pada tanggal 7 Juli 2016.[14]
Kehidupan pribadi
Halimah menikah dengan Mohammed Abdullah Alhabshee[15], seorang pensiunan[16] keturunan Arab[17], dan memiliki lima anak.[18] Halimah adalah seorang muslimah..[19] Dia tinggal di dupleks HDB publik di Yishun, terdiri dari satu 5 kamar rata dan satu 4 kamar rata bergabung bersama dengan menghancurkan dinding tengah.[20]
