Lee DeForest (26 Agustus 1873 – 30 Juni 1961) adalah seorang ahli fisika dari Amerika Serikat yang berhasil menemukan triode atau tabung audion pada tahun 1906.[1]
Kehidupan
Ia merupakan salah orang yang ikut berjasa dalam perkembangan teknologi radio selain Marconi.[1] Ia sering disebut sebagai bapak radio, kakek televisi, doktor fisika, serta telah berhasil menciptakan 300 penemuan.[1]
Triode atau tabung audion adalah sebuah alat penting yang banyak digunakan pada radio,telepon, radar, televisi, dan komputer.[1] Pada tahun 1912, De Forest menemukan bahwa triode atau tabung audion dapat dipakai sebagai penguat sinyal listrik dan pembangkit osilasi.[2] Saat itu triode banyak digunakan dalam berbagai alat komunikasi, tetapi sejak tahun 1947 triode diganti oleh teknologi transistor[3]. Meskipun teknologi triode yang ia ciptakan terganti dengan teknologi yang lain, tetapi De Forest tetap dianggap sebagai tokoh terkemuka di bidang elektronik.[4]
De forest terlahir dari keluarga pendeta. Ayahnya merupakan seorang pendeta fanatik yang menginginkan dan menyiapkan De Forest untuk menjadi pendeta seperti dirinya.[4] Ketika berusia 6 tahun, ia bersama keluarganya pindah ke Alabama.[4] Sebagai seorang pendeta yang baik, keluarga De Forest selalu membela kaum yang lebih lemah.[4] Ayah De Forest mendirikan sekolah untuk orang-orang negro meskipun mendapatkan tentangan yang besar dari orang-orang kulit putih.[4]
