Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (lahir 18 Juli 1918) dikenal di seluruh dunia sebagai pejuang kemerdekaan melalui kegiatan anti apartheidnya dan kemudian menjadi Presiden Afrika Selatan. Masa kecilnya dihabiskan di Thembu kemudian memulai karir di bidang hukum.

Beliau juga memiliki nama kehormatan dari klannya yaitu Madiba.

Pada 1934, ia memulai program B.A. di Fort Hare University, dimana ia bertemu Oliver Tambo yang menjadi teman dan koleganya yang setia. Setelah menentang kebijakan universitas dan diminta keluar. Ia pindah ke Johannesburg dan melanjutkan kuliahnya di University of South Africa setelah mengambil hukum di University of the Witswatersrand.

Pernikahan

Pernikahan pertama Mandela dengan Evelyn Ntoko Mase berakhir dengan perceraian pada 1957 setelah 13 tahun. Pernikahannya dengan Winnie Madikizela yang berjalan 38 tahun berakhir dengan perceraian 1996. Pada ulang tahunnya ke-80, Mandela menikahi Graça Machel, janda dari mantan Presiden Mozambik Samora Machel, yang juga seorang kawan ANC.

Nelson Mandela mengikuti African National Congress (ANC) dari tahun 1942.

Karena kegiatannya yang antiapartheid, ia menjalani berbagai masa hukuman. Pada 5 Agustus 1962, Mandela ditangkap dan dipenjarakan di Johannesburg Fort kemudian pada 25 Oktober 1962, ia dijatuhi hukuman 5 tahun penjara dan pada 12 Juni 1964, ia dan sekelompok aktivis lainnya dijatuhi hukuman penjara seumur hidup.

Setelah menolak pembebasan bersyarat dengan menghentikan perjuangan bersenjata pada Februari 1985, Mandela tinggal di penjara sampai dibebaskan pada 11 Februari 1990 atas perintah Presiden Frederik Willem de Klerk setelah ditekan oleh seluruh dunia.

Presiden

Nelson Mandela menjabat sebagai Presiden Afrika Selatan dalam masa sekitar 5 tahun (Mei 1994 - Juni 1999) setelah memenangkan Pemilu dan menjadi presiden kulit hitam pertama dengan de Klerk sebagai Deputi presiden.

Masalah AIDS menjadi sumber kekecewaan orang-orang dan penyesalan Mandela karena dalam masa pemerintahannya, ia kurang memperhatikan masalah ini. Anaknya, Makgatho Mandela, meninggal karena AIDS pada 6 Januari 2005.
