Pemulung adalah orang yang mengambil kembali bahan-bahan yang dapat digunakan kembali yang dibuang oleh orang lain untuk dijual dan di daur ulang atau untuk konsumsi pribadi.[1] Ada jutaan pemulung di seluruh dunia, terutama di negara berkembang, tetapi juga meningkat di negara pasca-industri.[2]
Berbagai bentuk pemilahan sampah telah dipraktekkan sejak zaman kuno, tetapi tradisi pemilahan sampah modern berakar selama industrialisasi pada abad kesembilan belas.[3] Selama setengah abad terakhir, pemilahan sampah telah berkembang pesat di negara berkembang karena urbanisasi, kolonialisme beracun, dan perdagangan sampah global.[4] Banyak kota hanya menyediakan pengumpulan sampah padat.[5]
