Slade adalah grup musik glam rock dari Wolverhampton di West Midlands, Inggris. Mereka sering menuliskan judul lagu mereka dengan ejaan yang salah. Pada awal tahun 1970-an, enam singel dan dua album mereka menduduki urutan nomor satu di Britania Raya.[1] Lagu "Merry Xmas Everybody" menduduki peringkat nomor satu pada bulan Desember 1973, dan telah menjadi lagu Natal yang sering diputar di Britania Raya hingga kini.

Mereka tidak begitu berhasil menembus pasar Amerika Serikat. Namun, Cum on Feel the Noize ketika dibawakan kembali oleh Quiet Riot berhasil menduduki urutan nomor satu tangga lagu AS.

Karier

Don Powell (drum) dan Jim Lea (gitar bass) dilahirkan dan dibesarkan di Wolverhampton. Sementara itu, gitaris utama Dave Hill lahir di Devon, tetapi pindah ke Wolverhampton ketika masih kanak-kanak. Vokalis utama Noddy Holder lahir dan besar di kota Walsall yang berdekatan. Slade dimulai pada tahun 1966 sebagai N'Betweens yang bermain di kelab-kelab lokal. Ketika mendapat manajer bernama Chas Chandler, mereka mengganti nama menjadi Ambrose Slade sebelum menyebut diri sebagai Slade. Penampilan mereka diubah menjadi skinhead agar diperhatikan publik.

Mereka segera meninggalkan gaya skinhead karena tidak ingin dikaitkan dengan hooliganisme sepak bola. Rambut mereka dipanjangkan agar bisa ikut gerakan glam rock. Judul lagu-lagu mereka sengaja ditulis dengan ejaan yang salah seperti dialek orang Black Country. "Mama Weer All Crazee Now" (1972) dan "Cum On Feel The Noize" (1973) menjadi lagu-lagu hit di awal karier mereka.

Pada tahun 1974, pemain drum Don Powell mengalami kecelakaan mobil yang mengakibatkan dirinya mengalami amnesia total. Slade mengawali kebangkitannya pada tahun 1980 dengan EP konser Slade Alive at Reading '80. Singel "My Oh My" sampai di urutan 2 tangga lagu Britania Raya pada tahun 1983, diikuti kembalinya "Merry Xmas Everybody" di urutan Top 20.
