USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73) adalah sebuah kapal induk kawal kelas Casablanca milik Angkatan Laut Amerika Serikat. Dia tenggelam dalam Pertempuran Samar selama Pertempuran Teluk Leyte setelah berperan besar dalam memukul balik kapal-kapal permukaan milik Jepang. Dia hanyalah satu-satunya kapal induk Amerika yang tenggelam oleh tembakan musuh selama Perang Dunia II.
Tenggelam
[sunting | sunting sumber]Gambier Bay tenggelam karena mengalami banjir di ruang mesinnya.[2] Menurut Amerika Serikat, kapal ini hancur tenggelam karena serangan dari peluru 8 in (200 mm) dari kapal penjelajah berat Jepang Chikuma. Sementara Jepang melaporkan bahwa kapal ini ditenggelamkan oleh Yamato karena Yamato dan Kongou mengakui bahwa mereka yang menembak tepat di kapal induk itu, karena dengan bukti foto dimana kapal Yamato terlihat jelas berada tak jauh dari kapal Gambier Bay, dan juga kapal Yamato hanya menembakkan meriamnya sekali selama pertempurannya, yaitu kepada si Gambier Bay.[3][4]
