Dalam geofisika, teori dinamo merupakan teori yang mengusulkan mekanisme penghasilan medan magnet oleh Bumi, planet lain, atau bintang. Teori ini mendeskripsikan proses saat cairan yang berotasi, berkoveksi, dan konduktif secara elektrik dapat menghasilkan medan magnet dalam waktu yang lama.

Ada tiga syarat agar dinami dapat beroprasi:

  • Medium cairan yang konduktif secara elektrik
  • Energi kinetik yang dihasilkan oleh rotasi planet
  • Sumber energi internal untuk mengarahkan gerakan konvektif dalam cairan.[1]
