Bus rel Bathara Kresna adalah bus rel (rail bus) milik PT Kereta Api Indonesia, yang beroperasi di rute Solo Purwosari-Wonogiri dan merupakan proyek kerja sama Pemerintah Kota Surakarta dengan PT KAI, pada saat Kota Surakarta dipimpin oleh Joko Widodo. Bus rel ini adalah bus rel kedua di Indonesia setelah bus rel Kertalaya di Sumatera Selatan. Bus rel ini diperkenalkan kepada publik pada tanggal 26 Juli 2011, di Surakarta bersama dengan bus bertingkat pariwisata. Bus rel ini mulai beroperasi pada tanggal 5 Agustus 2012 dengan rute Sukoharjo-Solo Purwosari-Yogyakarta Tugu. Karena ada jembatan kereta api yang sedang diperkuat antara Stasiun Pasarnguter-Stasiun Wonogiri, untuk sementara bus rel ini hanya sampai Stasiun Sukoharjo.

Bus rel ini berhenti beroperasi pada sekitar awal tahun 2013 karena rangkaian bus rel yang sering rusak. Bus rel ini dibawa ke pabrik PT Inka di Madiun untuk diperbaiki. Hingga 2015 nasibnya menjadi tidak jelas. Pada tahun 2014, PT KAI meluncurkan Grafik Perjalanan Kereta Api (Gapeka) 2014. Di gapeka tersebut tertera nama bus rel ini, tak menutup kemungkinan bahwa bus rel ini akan beroperasi kembali pada tahun 2014. Namun, menurut Direktur Utama PT KAI, Ignasius Jonan, bus rel ini terancam tidak akan dioperasikan lagi karena adanya problem teknis dan biaya operasional KA yang telah lama mangkrak tesebut sangat tinggi.

Uji coba 2014-2015

Tanggal 4 Desember 2014, bus rel ini kembali diujicobakan oleh PT KAI dan Dinas Perhubungan, Komunikasi, dan Informatika Kota Surakarta. Bus rel ini rencanannya dioperasikan pada 6 Februari 2015 dengan rute Solo-Sukoharjo-Wonogiri dengan tarif Rp4.000,00.^[1] Namun pada awal Februari 2015, Kementerian Perhubungan Indonesia membatalkan pengoperasian bus rel itu hingga waktu yang tidak ditentukan. ^[2]

Memasuki bulan Maret 2015, kembali diumumkan bahwa bus rel akan diluncurkan kembali pada tanggal 11 Maret 2015, dengan operasional untuk umum dimulai pada tanggal 12 Maret 2015.^[3]

Asal usul istilah

Nama Bathara Kresna berasal dari tokoh Mahabharata, Krishna atau Kresna yang bertugas menyelamatkan dunia dan menegakkan kebenaran setelah perang di Kurukshetra. Karakteristik tokoh tersebut kemudian dilekatkan pada bus rel ini sehingga menumbuhkan kebanggaan bagi setiap penumpangnya.
